The Forge

The renovation and extension of an old forge dwelling in Exmoor National Park

A project that reimagines the original conversion of a former forge and stable building as featured in House Beautiful magazine in 1955. The new extension and alterations seek to enhance The Forge’s historic appearance, reflect its industrial heritage and improve the overall thermal performance to bring the dwelling up to modern standards appropriate for a young family to live in. The new ‘elevated’ kitchen extension with secret balcony enables panoramic views of the Bristol Channel. Charred timber (Shou sugi ban) cladding is inspired by the blackened driftwood that regularly washes up in Porlock Bay.
